Are You Using Enough Sunscreen? Here's How to Know.
6/12/2025
When it comes to protecting your skin from sun damage, it’s not just what sunscreen you use—it’s how much you use that really counts. Many people apply far too little, reducing the level of protection and leaving their skin vulnerable to harmful UV rays.
So, how much is enough?
For your face and neck: Use about a nickel-sized amount (roughly 1/4 teaspoon). Don’t forget often-missed areas like the ears, hairline, and under the chin.
For your whole body: For average size adults - apply about 1 ounce (or a full shot glass) to cover head-to-toe. That includes arms, legs, back, chest, and feet—especially if they’re exposed in sandals! Larger adults may need more than 1 ounce for full coverage.
Tips for Best Protection:
- Apply 15 minutes before sun exposure
- Reapply every 2 hours, or more often if sweating or swimming
- Choose a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher
- Don’t forget your lips!
- We recommend having on hand a lip balm with SPF and mineral powder or brush-on SPF for touch-ups.
Additional Sun Safety Tips
- Wear protective clothing – Long sleeves, wide-brim hats, and UV-blocking sunglasses help shield your skin.
- Seek shade – Especially between 10 AM and 4 PM when the sun’s rays are strongest.
- Avoid tanning beds – They significantly increase your risk of skin cancer and premature aging.
- Protect your scalp – Use a hat or spray SPF for thinning areas or part lines.
- Check your medications – Some increase sun sensitivity; talk to your provider.
- Get your skin checked – Routine skin exams help catch issues early.
Using the right amount of sunscreen is a simple step that makes a big difference. It’s one of the most effective ways to keep your skin healthy, youthful, and protected year-round.
