The Importance of UV Awareness in Dermatology

By: Our Team

7/9/2024

When we think about health, we often overlook the impact of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Dermatology highlights the importance of UV awareness, as prolonged exposure can lead to serious skin conditions, including skin cancer. July is UV Awareness Month!

UV radiation from the sun and artificial sources like tanning beds is classified into UVA and UVB.

- UVA rays penetrate deeply, causing premature aging and long-term skin damage.

- UVB rays affect the outer skin layers, causing sunburn and contributing to skin cancer.

The Risks of UV Exposure

1. Skin Cancer: UV exposure can cause basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma, the latter being particularly dangerous.

2. Premature Aging: UV rays accelerate wrinkles, leathery skin, and age spots.

3. Eye Damage: UV exposure can lead to cataracts and macular degeneration.

4. Immune Suppression: UV radiation can weaken the skin’s defenses.

How to Protect Your Skin

1. Use Sunscreen: Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30+. At OneSkin Dermatology we offer a variety of sunscreens for face and body – stop in to choose the one that’s right for you!

2. Wear Protective Clothing: Use long sleeves, hats, and sunglasses.

3. Seek Shade: Especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

4. Avoid Tanning Beds: They emit harmful UV radiation.

5. Regular Skin Checks: Perform self-exams or partner exams for skin changes regularly.
